Snow Scoop June 2010 Joliet Ski Club Vol. 41 No. 1 Meeting the 3rd Thursday of June, July, And August New newsletter editor takes over from Dave Kiefner. Dave has moved over to be the treasurer and he will be a hard act to follow as he did a super job as newsletter editor. This is the first newsletter I have ever edited on my own. I was the assistant editor of the Morris Lions Newsletter about 20 years ago but all I did was proofread. So, bear with me as I learn a new computer program for putting together newsletters. Any one wanting to have an article published in the newsletter can do so by sending it as a file attached to an e-mail to

(there is a lower case L between the 4 and the number 10). If your article contains pictures or graphics they must not be included in the article but sent as separate files. This will allow me to better organize the final newsletter. Those of you that get the newsletter by e-mail this version will be sent as a pdf file that will be in color as well as include pictures. The post office version will be in black and white without pictures due to printing costs. If you have changed your e-mail address lately or do so in the future let me know at the above e-mail address ASAP. The first couple of issues will be e-mailed to everyone that has given the club an e-mail address and the post office version will be mailed to everyone that Dave sent them to. After that the post office version of the newsletter will only sent to those members without e-mail. Any member with e-mail may request that the post office version also be sent to them. Some of you may not believe this but I know am not perfect. Hopefully I catch on fast and that there are not too many mistakes. Please let me know if any who, what, where, when, or how mistakes are made so that they can be corrected and please forgive any mistakes in grammar that I may make. Editor:Ron Dewey Next Years Trips May 15 was the CMSC trip seminar. The trip directors are busy getting bids and making plans to provide club members with the best possible choices for ski trips this coming winter. It is early so there is nothing to report as of yet. I have heard rumors. Since we do not print rumors the facts will be published as soon as we know them. June Ski Club Social Event The 4th annual I&M Canal Joliet Ski Club ride from Bill Kennedy’s house will be June 26 at 9:30 am. Bring a dish to pass and your favorite beverage. Meat (grill stuff) will be provided. Don’t want to ride or in case of rain come later (12 or 1 pm). Games will be played inside or outside weather permitting. Call Ron Dewey (815-942-2336) or Bill (815-210-0873) by Wednesday June 23 to let us know you are coming or if you have any questions. Kentucky Derby Party – It was a Hit! While there were threats of the race being postponed due to heavy thunderstorms at Churchill Downs on May 1st, luck was on our side and 27 of us rooted our horses on as the race was held as scheduled. It was a sloppy race, sloshed through by the 20 horses who braved the muddy conditions. It was Super Saver’s day and he crossed the finish line first. There were two winning tickets in the house, bought by lucky ladies Cheryl Warning and Annette Ruffner – way to go gals. I think folks were ready to party early, as guests started arriving at 2:30 p.m. Thanks, Steve and Brenda, for helping me finish with the preparations J. No surprise, everyone brought a dish to pass and we had a wonderful array of appetizers and snacks from the get-go, followed by our main entrées and tasty salads and then some really great desserts. Bartender Ron Dewey made us up some real smooth Mint Juleps using fresh mint grown by Farmer Barry Westphal. As requested, most folks went along with a long-standing Derby tradition and showed up in some kind of festive hat for the occasion. Hat winning honors were taken by Pam Bishop and Dave Kiefner. Pam was decked out in a beautiful, large-brimmed, hand-made decorative hat she and her daughter made topped off by a sleek black and white dress and high-heels. She belonged at Churchill Downs rather than in Crest Hill, guess we were just lucky. Kiefner switched off between two hats, one a very tall, black, Guinness top hat and the other an oversized Jackhammers sponge baseball cap from his favorite ball team. Honorable mentions for other fine hats go to Nancy, Debbie, Terri, Ruthann, Brenda, Sherry, Annette, Cheryl, Anita, hostess Barb, Ron, Barry, Bill P., Craig, Steve, John, Bill B., Bob, Brent, and Earley. While the race lasted only a few minutes, the games in Crest Hill lasted ‘til nearly midnight. These included euchre, CLR dice, and chicken-foot dominoes. Thanks, folks, for making this social event a real winner for our club.
